artist statement

My work is concerned with particular elements of landscape- the horizon line, sea level, atmosphere, space and perspective- and their application to sculpture. With a combination of handmade, found and store-bought objects, I am exploring how certain themes and concerns of landscape art such as light, color, the passing of time and human interaction (long the subject of painters and two-dimensional work), translate to three-dimensional work in contemporary materials.

Although small in overall size, my sculptures are not models and can be experienced on a variety of scales: small elements may evoke larger ones and reference landscape/geology as well as the human influences of navigation and architecture; on a micro level the grain, texture, reflection and weight of materials are equally as important and emphasized; the utilitarian and recognizable objects within the work relate to the body and are human in scale. A variety of time scales are considered as well: materials which corrode, oxidize and evaporate quickly such as sugarcubes, industrial paper and water are combined with longer-lasting stone, plastic and metal.

Other themes which run through my work are more personal and anecdotal and are concerned with issues of love, loss, and sexuality.
